There's a new book out, called "Perfect Pond-Want One?", and I think it addresses a lot of the issues in regards to core trenching. I couldn't core trench my way out of a wet paper bag, but without heavy equipment I'd think you'd have to have a fairly dry field. Backhoe, maybe?
