Thanks for all the great advice.

How much salt would I need in an 80 or 100 quart cooler? (I'm assuming non-iodized, such as kosher salt.)


I would suggest a 0.5 percent solution (same as 5000 ppm). This comes out to .64 oz (weight not measurement!) per gallon of water. Of course you won't be filling your containers to the top so lets say you fill your 20 qt. cooler with 15 gallons of water. 15 gallons X .64 oz per gallon is about 10 oz. of noniodized salt.

Doesn't have to be Kosher salt as long as it is Iodine free. At my grocery store you can buy either Iodine added or Iodine free Morton salt. The one with out it says, "This salt does not supply Iodide a necessary nutrient."

From the suggestions, I'm now planning on 50 fish, and I'm hoping to find 12 inch, or larger, fish. I'm just having trouble finding larger fish. I've got calls and e-mails into several places. My regular supplier only has the 9-11 inchers. There are a few "fish trucks" that come through several times a year from Kentucky and Tennessee. But, I'd sure like to find something local.

A "fish truck" would have the advantage of not dealing with the hauling although many times you will have to meet a fish truck at a redezvous point.

There is also a guy a few counties away who claims to have Kamloops for sale. I haven't tried to call him yet. Does anybody have any experience with them? I'd prefer to have trout that have existed in the local area for a long long time. Plus, just for the viewing pleasure, I want some golden trout.

Kamploops is pretty much the standard domesticated strain used in aquaculture. Truthfully touting "strains" can be nothing more than sales gimmicks. Many rainbow trout producers these days don't even keep their own broodstock on hand anymore. Many order sterile female eggs from specialized egg producers like Trout Lodge in Washington state. It's less labor intensive and simpler.
