Same principle as stopping up a toilet. In fact, I would consider not only straw, but shredded paper, if you could find enough of it.

I have a small childs swimming pool that recently began leaking. I use it for my black lab's water source. She was upset. When I found the two inch slit, I put two pieces of bubblegum in my mouth, chewed the sugar out, and plugged it and it has not leaked since. Fixing leaks is easy enough, if you know where they are and their size and cause, assuming the pond has been built properly, which is no safe assumption, normally. Those are the diffult things to figure out and discover.
