I don't want this to seem like I am freely advertising a service on pond boss so here it goes.
I am an Aquatic Biologist in SW Ohio who is willing to help anyone out if they are having problems with their pond or simply needs advice on pond stuff in general. The reason I am posting this is because I am not longer employed and am currently going back to school.
I have a ton of pond experience and hate for it to go to waste while I am back in school.

I have a question, in a past post you stated the following:
"For the record, if any professional recommends using barley to kill algae, they can be fined big time! It is not for farm ponds! Water garden ponds fine...... "
Could you elaborate on this? I've seen quite a few references to using barley and had never seen anyone who indicated it was unlawful.

As an Aquatic Biologist, it doesn't make sense to use the Barley in a farm pond situation. That is if one understands how it works. With that said, barley is not labeled as a pesticide so technically it is illegal to use it as such. Now is the EPA or local ag. dept. going to enforce it probably not. If you want some really good info visit Purdue University's website and look at what research they have done with it.

Yes, no cost.....that is as long as the recommendations transpires over e-mail. If someone is having a big problem and really needs help, I would have no problem charging them a nominal fee for my time and travel. The bottom line is, is that I don't want my knowledge to go to wasted while I am at school!

I think he means it is unlawful to market barley straw as an algaecide,flocculant or clarifier; much the same as microbial products. I doubt that if a private owner used barley straw anyone would care.

Welcome BJ. Pond Boss is great for keeping your mind active and involved. What course are you pursuing in school?

Well most in my field would laugh, but I am going back to school to get my RN degree in nursing and then eventually a MS sooner or later. The idea is for me to work as a nurse 3 days a week and as a biologist the other 3. So we will see.....

Technically speaking herbicides fit into the larger catagory of pesticides, but the term isn't normally used that way.
