Pond Boss Forums STOCKING A NEW POND Raising Forage and Bait Flood control hole used as part time fathead pond

i was thinking of constructing a small 20'X20' foot hole about 1 ft slopeing down to a max of 3 feet. it would be using it as a area for my creek to slow down during floods before it enters my pond about 500yds away. The design would be relitivly simple. I need a bridge so i would use the excavated dirt to construst a dam that has a pipe running through it at stream level the pipe would be probally 6" in diameter just larger then the average stream flow needs. the dam/bridge would only hold water back when the stream was above average and more H2O was flowing then the pipe could accomedate. the dam would span a narrow area on my stream 4 feet wide with 3 foot banks the dam would be level with the banks. the hole would be located on the bank a little upstream from the dam/bridge and would be fed with with water only when the stream is blocked enough to raise the water level up to the pipe that feeds the pond. I know this design will work as i have made slightly smaller models in years past. the question i have is will fatheads spawn in these conditions or has anyone ever done anything like this?

i forgot to mention the hole would have an outlet for when/if the flood is that bad

I'm going to do much the same thing.

I am hearing they will spawn fine if you feed them and add some spawning structure for them. They like to attach their eggs beneath a flat surface, so floating boards may be all you will need.

Pallets should be perfect! Cinder blocks are another way to go. I'm probably going to raise gambusia... live bearers that won't need any structure.
