a redear sunfish fry?. I finaly caught something besides minnows in my trap today. Its either a RES or CNBG. I tried to take a picture of it, but no luck. Speaking of the FH's. Its amazeing on how many I have. There all over the place by the hundreds.

I asked about "fry". I don't know when a fish grows out of "fry" status. This little guy is a little over an inch long and maybe 1/2 inch high.

I'm not sure most of us could tell the difference between RES and (CN)BG at an inch length; I know I would not have any certainty to such a decision I made personally.

This is a small (1.5" - 2") BG:

and I think this similarly-sized Lepomis is a RES:

Note the differences in the side patterns (stripes vs. dots). None of the experts (Bill Cody, et al. ) contradicted me in this assessment in a recent thread on small Lepomis I.D. (which I couldn't find just now, or I'd link to it), so I may be right.

In my pond, the RES do not develop the little red ear tab until they are nearly 3" in length.

This one does have a darkish ear tab.

Thank you for the link. If I had to guess. I would say its a CNBG. I will try and get better pictures and post later.

that's a green sunfish, all day, or one of the other larger mouth varieties but I've had small gsf for pets that grew up and they looked like that.

What is in the pond to your knowledge (what was stocked)? I assume the 2 pics are of the same fish above. I am holding off for now with some interesting comments about the 2 pics WRT fish vision. Given those 2 pics - anyone want to guess what those comments may be about ? Tell us about how you took the pics.

Okie's first pic really shows the vertical sidelines on the Lepomoid reflecting what little light is available, perhaps indicating how other fish might see it in the low light conditions under water???

ewest, I stocked CNBG, RES and CC. It is the same fish and I had it in a 2 gal. aqurium. My camera is not performing like it did as a young camera. Its showing its age. The auto focus isn't working to well, so I have to stand back a foot or so to get the little green light and then I move the camera in closer. The top pic was zoomed in and cropped using photo software. The second pic I didn't use the flash. I hope this is the info you wanted.

I agree looks like a green sun fish due to relative mouth size. It also looks to be stunted based on your saying it is a little over an 1" long and comparing to the 1.5-2" BG Theo posted picture of.
