Shipping fish.... Can I ship fish. I want to ship something can you guys help me out. What kind of box and padding etc do I need. Any icepacks or anything? How about the oxigen in the bag? Is that nessisary. and who do you normally ship with and is it easy. I guess also am I even allowed to ship a few sunfish?

I want to ship 3 or 4 of my sunfish to anyone who will pay shipping. I think my sunfish are very nice. I am sure they are a strain of Northern but may be more native to NC, I am not really sure but they are bluegill. I just want to experiment with shipping and let someone see a few of my fish.

I guess a little cast net or some kinda trap to collect them. I will figure something out if it happens.

Hatcheries ship fish but I they are fingerlings...I'm not sure if the same techniques would apply to larger BG. Pet stores also get fish by fedex.

My gut tells me the bigger BG will not ship well and this would really stress them....but heck, we're talking a few BG here...I say give it a shot!

The guys at Anderson Minnows ship via Fedex...if you call and ask them how they do it, I'm sure they'd tell you...you could also order something from them and see the container and shipping method first hand...maybe even recycle the box and bag(s).

howard and AaronM. have recently had smallmouth shipped to them overnight. Their SMB were around 6 or 7"

I don't know the specifics, but ice packs and pure oxygen are part of the picture.

One of the places where I've purchased fish, also ships fish. I don't know exactly what they do. But, I know they put the fish in a heavy plastic bag and I believe they give it a shot of oxygen (?? -- they have a big tank with a hose). The water in the bag is bright blue, so they obviously put some kind of chemical in it. Somebody also told me that they put some kind of "relaxant" in so the fish don't get stressed.

After sealing the plastic bag, they put it in a styrofoam cooler that they band with packing tape. It then goes in a cardboard box.

I'm not sure why the spines don't puncture the bag. I bought some 4-5 catfish from them recently, and they made it home OK in one of their plastic bags, placed in a cardboard box.

Yup, My 5 inch SMB came in a coleman style cooler.The fish were bagged in the same way you would normally get fish, that is ,double bagged,plastic bag, pumped full of oxygen. They also put one of those cooler packs in with the bag. Worked Ok for me.Only one floater.

What company shipped them?

that was Hartley Fish Farms, in kansas.The owner said he went to the hard plastic ice chest after a couple of "unfortunate" shipping incidences..One can only imagine

How much do they charge for smallies? Do you have a contact number?

I think it was 5$/fish for about a 5 inch fish, plus about $140 for shipping..877-591-8238..He guarantees the fish arrive alive..Bill Hartley was the fella a dealt with.

GW that is very good, all I read was the first one. I bet there is tons of even better info in there and I will read it later on. Well like I said if someone wants say 4 feed trained Bluegill some strain of northern or just native NC bluegill. They look real nice and real healthy so if you want to add a new strain to your bunch. you pay to ship them.
