To kill every thing except Bermuda grass around my place and pond? 75% of my place drains to my pond. I have Bermuda tring to grow but it is getting choked out by everything else. Any ideas?

brand new, never before used 1/4 acre pond.

I keep my new bermuda mowed low as possible, the bermuda will come on through.

What other grass/plant are there?

I've been looking into this too and from what I've read, 2,4-D is pretty popular, but Grazon seems to be the best. Problem with Grazon is you need a license to buy it. You might be able to get small quantities, but from what I'm told, I need to take a class first, get licensed, and then I can buy it.

There have been some good discussions about it over at www.tractorbynet.com with some guys who grow hay sharing what they know. Just do a search there for "Grazon" and you'll find it. I also started a thread over there about some grass I couldn't identify that mentions spraying. Do a search under "Johnson Grass" to find that thread.

You need a sprayer to apply it, as what time of the year you apply it.

I've put my name on the list for the Ag Extension class that is held here in the spring. It's $500 and lasts three days. It's supposed to cover everything you need to know about pasture management for beginners. I'm also looking for a decent, used sprayer that I can tow behind my tractor, or a large tank that I can use to build my own spraying rig. It's kind of late in the year for spraying, so I'm not in any rush, but I really want to have it by next spring.

Good luck,
Eddie

It's not how many ideas you have, but how many you make happen.

3/4 and 4 acre ponds.

You can use a lower concentration of glyphosate that will kill or stunt almost everything but bermuda. I have no idea what that concentration is, but maybe you can find it by googling. If you get the concentraiton just right, it stunts the bermuda slightly, but kills most of the other grass and weeds.

I'm waiting for a 95% glyphosate resistant (also called "Roundup Ready")bermudagrass seed which is in development. That would be the ultimate.

There is a specific chemical that kills everything but bermuda. It's called MSMA, and it works great. However, it contains an arsenic compound, and I doubt it's pond friendly.

Would the above chemicals be pond safe?

Broadleaf weed killers such as Weed B Gone for St. Augustine, wont harm Bermuda. It may weaken it some during the summer. Normally applied in Spring. A good lawn fertilizer will cause the Bermuda to overtake and choke out the weeds.

I have all sorts of weeds and grasses. The land that we bought has been pasture land for many many years. The more I mow, the more Bermuda I find. I don't have much broadleaf weeds. Its more of different kinds of thin leave grasses.

I use MSMA, it is an ornamental turf grass chemical, and it kills everything but bermuda. 2-4-D is pretty strong, and I thought that it would kill bermuda, but I'm not sure about that.
