Even though we've had a number of 90 degree days which is very usually for this time of year, my water temperatures seem to be staying rather cool. I have a new half acre pit pond and the only water that goes in it is from the rain and runoff from the field. As far as the rain goes we are running behind this year. I've been keeping an eye on water temperatures and today the surface temperature is 62 degrees, about three feet down it's 56 degrees and five to six feet down it's 50 degrees. I'm thinking this is a good thing. Any thoughts?

You are just getting to the point where many types of warm water fish ( excluding YP , eyes , northerns and trout - cool/cold water fish) increase their metabolism and spawning is still 6-10 degrees away for BG, RES and LMB. It is good for them to have lots to eat as the temps and energy levels go up.

BG started spawning a week ago. I feed every night. Here's a pic I took of the BG today. The temperatures have been holding at this point for over a month now.

Tom F, from what you described about your pond, those water temps seem very low to me for this time of year, especially considering your location.

Have you been having colder weather before the 90 degree days?

Wow that's very cool for this time of year. My trout pond with incoming well flow gets up to 63 F. with these 90 F. days. You could be growing out trout with temps like that! Are you sure your temp gauge is accuarate?

That does seem cool. My surface temp was 87 F today.

I question if his temp guage is accurate as bluegill would not bed in that cool of water.

Have had some cool spells. When I check the temp gauge to the air temperature it's accurate. The got to these temp around the first of May and pretty much stayed right there. The highest surface temp I've seen was 68 degrees last week.

I know what you're saying, Tom F. How long do you leave the thermo. in the water?

I also noticed that the bluegill had made and populated beds which would indicate warmer water temps.

He said that was a week before the 62 F. temp didn't he?

I am with Cecil - those water temps are to cold for BG spawning. Have you had big rains or is it spring fed ? Something dosen't add up.

Our surface water temps were 82-84F 2 days ago.

Took another look and the gauge has become defective.

Tom if your BG started spawning last week I bet your water temps are in the low 70s.
