There isn't cable internet (or tv) available where I live, and DSL will probably be obsolete before it would be available here.

After being spoiled in the city (3000 kpbs ADSL connection), I couldn't take slow speeds so I got HughesNet satellite service. I get a max of 1000 kpbs for about $70 per month. That's 1/3 the speed for about twice the money I was paying, but hey, I'm out of the city. It still blows the doors off of dial up.

The service isn't bad, heavy rain will interrupt it, but normally the connection is stable. I'm not promoting Hughes, but it's what I got and it isn't too bad.

I've had Starband for many years. When I signed up with StarBand it was the only satellite provider. I'm finally going to drop it. Just finished signing up with Wild Blue.

Hughes net here too. I like it pretty well. It beats the snot out of dial up.

Hughes Net here too. I'm not too exited about it, but after two years, I'm sort of used to it's limitations. Rain and sometimes clouds will kill it, but that's just part of satelitte.

Hughes net here also its not super fast but like eddie said you get use to it. It sure beats dialup i have had mine for about 1.5 years no complaints here.

I had an excellent tech support experience with HughesNet. A couple of guys followed through with my problem for a few days until it was resolved.

I should know better. I was talking to someone from the local phone company about a little problem with our line and he told me DSL was available now at my place. Not only can I get it, but it's cheaper than what I was paying in town last year. Something I need to check is how much of the potential speed I'll actually get here. The 1500 kbps service is $30 compared to $70 for 1000 kbps with HugesNet. With the Hughes service I'm guaranteed 650 kbps, so if I get at least that with the DSL I'll have to switch.

It really surprises me that DSL is available here. We're 4 miles from town, which has one traffic light and didn't have a restaurant until recently. The closest larger town is 15 miles away and there's almost nothing but farm land in between.

I have pixius which bounces radio signal off a tower not far from my house. DSL is a mile from my house, but I still have the old copper wire feeding the main box in my area. They won't tell me when they will hook it up. I pay $44.95 and DSL here, which will be faster is $14.95

I faced that for about two years. Three summers ago we moved a couple of miles -- which was a couple of miles beyound DSL coverage. Our dialup was absolutley awful.

I was going to go satellite, but I found that my cell phone carrier (it was called Cingluar then, and it is now AT&T) had a alternative. We have good cell coverage where we live, and I was able to buy a card for my laptop which worked quite well. I networked to to my wife's computer. Lots faster than dialup, but slower than DSL. I think it was $59.95 a month.

The nice thing about it was that it worked everwhere we went -- like to relatives that didn't have internet, to the beach, etc.

We finally got DSL about two months ago.

We went with Wild Blue. So far so good. I set up a wireless network to have access from my "man building" that is over a hundred feet away from our house. Locked in at 54Mbps.
