mikebee excellent post. Some of the variations you noted are indeed seen in crosses. That is one way to assess if you have crosses. Those variations could easily be many generations old . I have watched many times as lepomis in an aquarium change color and express many of those traits (color pattern , posture, aggression , submission , fear etc) that are described as emotions in humans. Here is an example.
