We caught the big one last Saturday at Cedar Creek while practicing for a tournament. It weighed 8 lbs 7-ozs. The white rings were around both eyes. Any idea what it is or why they are there?

I'm no expert, but it doesn't look diseased to me - perhaps a local eye variation. Reminds me of shark eyes.

It is a little thin; looks about like the hungry LMB I've got thinning my BG (RW-wise; it is much bigger).

Send the best closeup to Dr. Andy Goodwin University of Arkansas Pine Bluff at

[email protected]

and see what he has to say. He is a professor and fish pathologist.

Get back to us and let us know what he has to say.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Hi,

That's good. If it was just one fish, it may have been from an injury or developmental anomaly (a birth defect). That would be better than a lake full of eye flukes!

Andy

Hi,

In a normal fish eye, there is a shiny gold iris with the black pupil in the
middle. In your pictures, the pupil is dilated and that weird looking
white ring is a partially destroyed iris. Looking in the eye, I can also
see that the lens is cloudy (cataract). Judging from the look of the eye
lens, I would say that this fish has a parasite infection in the eye. The
most likely candidates are the eye flukes which have snails, fish, and birds
in their life cycle. There are other possibilities. The strange thing is
that this bass has such severe eye problems, but is still in good physical
condition. You would expect the eye problems to have impaired its ability
to feed.

What percentage of the fish in Cedar Lake have this problem?

Regards,

Andy

The fish was caught in 4 to 12 ft water at Cedar Creek Lake.

Do you know what that white ring is?

Another snail-in-the-life cycle parasite! Go Redears!
