'Struth. A spring may be gravity fed (due to water flowing downhill from a higher elevation) or fed by hydrostatic pressure (water pressure forcing water UP out of the ground). If the latter type, and located in your pond, lowered ground water levels can mean that the flow reverses and pond water flows into the spring.
