I was standing by the pond this evening and a Tilapia came up in the shallows and started to gargle some younguns. This black cloud of little ones would come out of the mouth for about 5 seconds and then she would suck them back in. The Tilapia have been in the pond for a little more than 5 weeks.
Pretty neat.

That must have been an awesome sight, BarO! I can't wait until ours spawn...Todd Overton brought ours yesterday!

Reord should be yours right around the corner since "all tackle" record is 5.25 #'s and fly categorey is "open"

Captain1. I sent you a PM.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Captain 1,

Boatcycle in Henderson or Overton Fisheries in Buffalo are the places that raise Tilapia close to us. They may be few and far between at this point........real popular. Good luck.

BarO,

Since we are practically neighbors, I'd be very interested in some updates on your Tilapia. How many did you put in and some info on how your bass are doing eating them. And of course, what happens when they die off in the winter.

My plan is to stock bass next year, and then the following year, introduce Tilapia. Right now I'm just putting in fathead minnows, coppernose bluegill and channel catfish. This should be plenty of forage for the bass when I plant them, but after a year, I think the Tilapia will be a good additon to my forage base after the bass have had a year to grow.

Thanks,
Eddie

It's not how many ideas you have, but how many you make happen.

Eddie,
This is my 3rd year with Tilapia. Last year I accounted for all but 3 Tilapia that I stocked. I caught 3 Tilapia that end up in my skillet and had 19 floaters in December(all biguns'). The bass must have ate all the fish from the numerous spawns because there were no small floaters when it got cold. I gave them a respectful funeral and burial(along with some help from the Turkey Vultures). I have more CNBG of all sizes this year than ever before since I bought this place ('04). I now have more high protein forage(CNBG & Tilapia) for my LMB and newly-acquired HSB. The FA has been almost nonexistent the last 2 years also.
I have put in 10lbs.(22-26 fish) each year into my .75 acre pond.
