Back when I first was able to stock smallies, I got a few hundred in various size groups, the largest was 5-7", if I recall correctly. The second season, a rat-pack of 8-12 smallies that ranged from 6-8" or 9", would hang around within 10-20' of my rock pier. They'd just be herding small fish.
I used to just toss fatheads and small shiners out and watch the melee. Fast fish.
Eric, I'd hand feed some fatheads to those chubsters you got!
