Last few weeks have been finding a dead CNBG every few days, with the only thing visibley wrong is some kind of pale green algae that seems to be growing out of or attached to the mouth of fish - have no idea whats going on.Have been feeding as long as fish are eating - aerator is on all the time as of a week ago- but had fish dieing before.HELP

I obviously can't tell for sure what's the problem, but you should keep in mind that your bluegill population may have a natural annual mortality up in the 30% range. If you really think about how many bluegill you have in your pond, it would be highly likely that you'll see mortalities every spring as the fish come out of the stressful winter period. I wouldn't be terribly worried about it.

Holding a redear sunfish is like running with scissors.

Smallpond,

I have bluegill morts every spring and it comes and passes just as Bruce says. The algae could be something that attaches after the fish dies as the surface of a fish is rich in nutrients. Sometimes however spring morts are a sign of too many fish in the pond. With too high of carrying capacities the over all fish population is not getting enough to eat before the stressful winter. It's nature's way of culling the numbers.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Take a look at the first link below it will help take you through the process and help you with what Cecil and Bruce are saying. Then look at the second link which is the archive to sick fish.
