The feed store where I used to buy my liquid fertilizer quit carrying it. None of the other feed stores I've checked so far carry it. Any of you N.Texas pondmeisters know some where close that carries liquid or powder fertilizer? Thanks in advance.

I am also in the Dallas area and have the same question. Can you use any flowering fertilizer? Miracle grow flower bloom for example since I have a box of that. It has the same ingredients so I was wondering if anyone had tried it. Good Question!!!

Estes chemicals in Carrolton, TX or Ft. Worth carry powdered fertilizer. It goes under the name Trophy Maker and comes in 25 pound containers. Liquid fertilizer should be found and most feed and seed stores. We use a place in Gainesville that is probably too far for ya'll to travel but there should be other options for liquid fertilization. Roadtrip I am in your area often, if you would like call me at the pond boss office and I might be able to arrange for you to get some from us.

Keith, I'm not sure about the Miracle Grow. Is it water soluble? High phosphorous content? Might also want to check cost per lb. vs. trophymaker, etc.

yes, its the high phosphorus content for flower and bloom stage and is water soluable. It's like 15 35 5 or something along those lines. On plants I use a half teaspoon per gallon and I have the majority of a 1 lb box left. I know it's the right chemicals but i wouldn't know how much to use since it is concentrated water soluable fertilizer. Has anyone worked with a similar product and if so how much would you use per acre?

We also sell the fertilizer Chad was referring to...it's a 12-61-0, water soluble. We are located in Prosper. So if that's closer to you, we usually have 10 to 15 bags in stock. They come in 25 lb bags and the first application requires between 6 and 10 lbs per surface acre. Follow up applications may be necessary a couple weeks later...just monitor your visability.

Trent, would you think the concentration would be similar. Is there any ratio listed on fertilizer to compare "strengths" of water soluable fertilizer? If it is about the same then it sounds like I wouldn't hurt a 2500sqft pond with that 1 pound box. Will it kill any fish or put chemicals in the meat? I live in Richardson and work in Plano so that's not too far. I'd love to come see what you guys have some time.

Keith, the problem with lawn or garden fertilizer is that you do not want any potash in your water. Even a percentage that is at 5 can be detrimental. Normally most ponds have plenty of potasium and no additional potasium is needed. That is why Trophy Maker, or liquid fertilizer contains no potash. Liquid fertilizer we use is 10-31-0. It is just highly concentrated. I would reccomend that you stick with fertilizer that is approved for aquatic use.

Chad, I'll give you a holler tomorrow. If we can't work it out I'll holler at Trent. First I've got a lead in Forney I'm checking out in the morning. Its a farm service agent from the U.S. Dept of Ag, NCRS. (Props to D.Davidson) This agent might know someone local who sells liquid fertilizer.
I checked all the feed/fertilizers stores that I could find numbers for in Kaufman, Terrell, Wills Point, Canton, Mesquite, and Dallas, one chemical company, and a hatchery in Van. A couple of them had never even heard of liquid fertilizer! A place in Henderson sells it for $5 a gallon, but thats a 200 mile round trip for me. Maybe I should have checked pond supply businesses instead of feed stores. Great learning experience.

Did you say a "2500 sq ft" pond? Sounds like a backyard water garden to me. Is that an accurate statement? If so, I don't work on ponds that small and you may want to speak with a water garden specialist. For that size pond, fertilization may not be a good idea. Even if you did fertilize, you'd be using about 4 oz of fertilizer from a 25 lb bag.
