Pond Boss Forums INTRO Questions & Observations Solar post cap lights

I'm getting ready to finish my dock soon and build a big tree fort for the kids. I was pricing treated lumber at Lowes earlier and ran across some nice looking copper 6x6 post caps with solar lights in them.

I don't have power run to my dock area and may not ever do it. Anyone used these lights, and do they put out much usable light? I'm wondering how reliable they are too. At $45/light it better not burn out or quit working after a couple years We have had the solar lights in our landscaping before and they are reliable.

I have some at my front gate the last just about all night but they dont put out alot of light.

My experience with solar lights is they are only good to see from a distance. Out on your dock would look very nice to see from your home, but to see anything while walking past them will be a disapointment. At $45 each, I'd think that's too much money for what you get out of it.

Our house is 7 miles away from our land but we plan to build in a couple years. Power is already run to the new homesite but it's not turned on. The home site is about 100 yards from the pond, so last night the wife & I agreed that maybe it would be better to just run power out to the dock. Now I'm leaning towards using plain copper caps to finish the posts.

I've found the solar lights do a better job of lighting near the ground. They work well for lighting a walkway. If you are looking to try out cheap, Walmart has a set of 4 for about $15. They just stick in the ground.

I've thought of buying some of them for nighttime hog hunting. Do they throw enough light to pick up anything in a scope?

I doubt it Dave. They do work well for night time catfishing. Cast just enough light to see to bait your hook, but not enough to attract bugs.

I don't want to attract the hogs. Hogs are nocturnal and you need a light source of some kind to see through a scope. Think I'll get some and try them. Hogs, like deer, don't seem to get upset about game cam flashes so the light shouldn't bother them.
