Think of this. If they give us those photos for free and there public, imagine what the government really has as far as technolagy. I bet they can read the date on a penny from up there.

Caution about it being an open forum is a good idea. This is public, very public.

It is also subject to spamming and other junk. So far it hasn't happened. But no matter how vigilant Lusk is, sooner or later....

Let me run a test.

I'll post my full name, birth date, SS#, home address, and all bank account & investment account numbers. What the heck...I'll also do the same for my wife and kids.

Then we'll see how long it takes for my identity to be stripped.

Aerial photos are being used by various agencies at least in Southern California. The California Coastal Commission is an quasi agency in CA that is somewhat of a watchdog regarding coastal property. There are a multitude of regulations regarding what you can build on a coastal bluff property and what measures that you can and cannot take to protect the bluff. The Coastal Commission did an aerial survey about ten years ago and then again about 2 years ago. They are performing side by side photo comparisons to determine if any bluff modifications have taken place. An unfortunate side effect of this process is that they have posted detailed aerial photographs of coastal properties, although now Google Earth is just as detailed.


As a side note Barbara Streisand sued to keep the photos from being available to the general public. She lost.

if you zoom in and go to the SW feeder arm of our pond, then go a little west, there is an added very light "white circle" in the photo, it looks like someone circled the foot bridge my dad built. That small white circle is not part of the original photo and there has never been anything on the ground to account for it.

This circle is the aerial equivalent of yellow tape placed around a crime scene. No doubt, a poacher was found in or around the subject foot bridge. A computerized, hi-res enhancement would reveal a Nebraska dentist in full fishing attire, playing a portable Pac-man machine.

Shorty, Interesting. Could it be a animal trail. It almost looks to me there is a straight line straight to the pond then it leads to the circle. I wonder if some type of animal used and actually wore a trail. Maybe something lived outside the pond and used it to drink. Did you check some of the other areial shots on differnt sights to see if its there.

I'm still sulking. According to Planimeter, someone stole 2 acres of my pond and I want to know who I see to get it back.

Joey, I thought about that, but you can see other game trails in the similar tall grass just east and a little north of there. They are dark green from the shawdows being cast on the game trail rather than white. I am pretty sure someone cirlcled that, for what reason I have no idea. The other possibilty is that there is a stray hair in the satelite lens.

Well if you were in Southern California I would believe that somewhere a beady eyed person was carefully examining your photo and asking the following:

Is this foot bridge permitted?

Does this foot bridge meet California safety standards?

Were California labor standards followed when this bridge was built?

Does this bridge meet California Earthquake standards?

Does this footbridge interfere with any indigenous flora or fauna?

Is this bridge located in a wetland?

Has a warning label been placed on this bridge warning innocent bridge users not to do venture too close to the edges of this dangerous contraption?

Is there some way we can tax this bridge?

Humm unless they have a better view (which is very possable) there is no way of telling that was a foot bridge. Maybe its a map of buried treasure... or maybe its someone telling you to extend the pond to those markings.. Either way its interesting.

How big is shorty's lake? With that livesearch aerial pic, it looks like a Meteorite Crater. I wonder why Nebraska is lucky to have such recent usgs pics. It seems a crapshoot of which states are updated. I checked on livesearch, and mine is still a '94 pic.

I know I said it before BUT I have to say it again. Here are the best pics I found so far. The sight is hard to navigate but when you get to right maps click the one that says color or right above it and the closer you get some of the B/W photos get better. I can get 30 feet up from my pond, a little higher is clearer but by far the best of my place, still not up to date. Go into where it says science in you backyard then pick your state the maps are in there, the second one down seems to be best for surfing. G/L http://www.usgs.gov/

The picture on mapquest is the most recent for my pond as opposed to the other programs.

I would say the mapquest picture of my place is about 2-3 years old whereas all the others were maybe 7-10 years old.

Shorty a small voice (I think from Ill.) ask me to investigate if the circle could in fact be as noted :

I checked with ML and he gave me a good contact with NASA. The NASA rep. said no way it was theirs'. He noted the Hubble sat/tele had a flaw but not like your circle. He said check with the Ruskies and provided a name. They said no , that it must be from a cheap Chinese low orbit satellite with a disposable camera from Hong Kong. The Chinese said no but check with Hollywood. Finally I found the right guy and he provided that the Star Trek , Star Wars and even the Lost in Space satellites were better than that. He said without hesitation (those movie guys really know about cameras) that it was from the following satellite from a c grade movie and in fact you were seeing the results of 2 crossed hairs not one.

Theo's pond looks tiny in that mapquest aerial. Its like everyone is playing 'mine is bigger than yours' in that region.

I like the pond that is southeast of his place with the island. Theo, do you have a pic of that island of the neighbors pond?

Oh, OK - that's on Harold's place. He's my hero - he has enough money to be called "eccentric" instead of what people around here call me.

No, I don't have a picture of the island. You can't see the pond from the road, and while I believe in the back of my head I knew that Harold had a pond, I didn't have any details on it until you guys pointed it out. That driveway that goes to the big pond with the island doesn't even open up onto the road yet.

Yeah, there's quite a few bigger ponds in the area. That even bigger pond south of Harold's is "Mirror Lake" in a county park. I have hiked around it many times and fished there some, but the fishing stinks. The water looks really infertile and there is NEVER anything approaching an algal bloom. Or a decent-sized fish. No boats are permitted and the shore fishing is just plain lousy.

If you go North of my pond, there's a bigger "L" shaped one, which is in an orchard. Just to the west of it are two ponds a little bigger than mine - the larger, southern one belongs to my cousin Stumpy Jack. Bruce saw him on the cover of PB Mag once.
