I have been letting my pond 'mature' naturally, but not much vegetation is taking hold. I feel that this is due to pitch angle in the banks, which I purposely made rather steep to keep too many weeds from taking hold. My therory was, as the weeds try to take hold, the water level drops depriving the under-water types of weeds to not be under water anymore. 4 years later, that approach, in and of itself, is working fine.
However, I would like to plant 'something' that can handle the 4+ feet of water-level-drop, if for nothing esle, diversity both in looks and preferably cover for the fry to hide in. The pond is in S. Oregon, 200'X300', 20' deep when full, never drops more than 5'. My goal/vision for the pond is primarily fish, due mainly to my disgust in 3-acres of goose-poop that comes with the wonder of waking up with a yard FULL of those beautiful birds. Tough call, but I don't want to "invite" anymore birds than already migrate through... I have thought about water liilies, as invasive as they are, but again, maybe the steep sides would keep them localized along the far bank where I would plant them. Thanks ya'll...
