I have a concrete block structure, a large log, and a tire structure in one end of the pond. I'm keeping the other end structure free in case we want to swim in it. (Although the dock we are building is arguably structure too) The pond is 3/10 acre and will be 7 - 8' deep in the deep end. Is this enough structure? All the structure is near the banks, there is nothing out in the middle.

We got 4 seperate small rains over the last few days and there is alot more water in the pond. Another rain or two and the water will be too high for me to easily add more structure.

Thanks,
Eric

Eric, just as general rule of thumb you want to have no more than 15% of your lake in structure. I personally believe that you should have no less than 15% as well. If my math is right then you would want to have about 2,000 square feet of structure in your lake.

Thanks Doc. I've heard the "15% rule" as well, but have never understood if that means 15% of surface or total volume. There is one area of the bottom of the pond that the water hasn't covered yet. I may add a stake bed there. (If Thursday's and Saturday's forecasted rain don't cover it)

I've not previously heard of a 15% rule. What is the rationale behind it?

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Not sure, I've just always heard that 15% of a pond needs to be in structure to maximize fish production.

If forced to jot down a number, I'd say 10% to 20%. Hard to argue with 15% having made that statement.

IIRC it was Bob Lusk who said 90% of the fish will be found in 10% of the pond. I always figured placing structure (correctly) let you predict exactly where that 10% was.
