I have seen the hardiness and longevity that hedge oaks possess but I was wondering if anyone has used them for structure in a lake. I know the pitfalls of using "green" oaks but will the Hedge Oaks cause the same staining in the water? We have drilled 40 holes with a 12" auger and we are planning on setting the structure next week in our 5 acre lake. Any help would be appreciated.

Hedge works great! That is what most of my structure is made of. I used green and cured with no problems. The larger trees are dense enough not to float, so it makes them even easier to place and anchor.

I gather "Hedge Oak" is yet another regional name for Hedgeapple/Osage Orange/Bois D'Arc? What a great language we speak.

Just to be sure, cut a green chunk and put it in a bucket of natural water, If it doesn't cause a problem to the coloration, use it. Or toss a couple of minnows in after 4 or 5 days and check on how they do.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.
