I know this isn't directly pond related, but they were shot over my pond and I'm so proud I just had to share. My son went on his first duck hunt last weekend and got his first ducks. The mallard drake was his first. It had 2 curls. Very good looking bird. I'm going to get it mounted for him. The other was a gadwall.

Great pictures! He'll never forget his first ducks, that big greenhead is a beauty. How old is that single shot he's holding?

That's awesome..... AND I believe it is directly pond related. Why not do a little talk on here about wildlife other than fish? You can manage a pond to attract ducks as well.

Reminds me of a time -- same pic different youngster (me) -- old single shot. The forehand grip came off when I made the shot. There I stood - gun in one hand , forehand grip in the other - greenhead spiraling down -- the only one who knew what to do was the dog. When he came back with the duck he looked at me just like H2O's dog in the second pic (thinking - I hope he knows what he is doing - sure hope that kid is careful with that gun). LOL

That single shot is a Cresent Firearms Victor Ejector .410 that was my Great Grandfathers. It was made in 1898. It was my first shotgun, and now I think my son has earned it!!!

Greg- I live within 2 hrs of BPS HQ in Springfield and the Cabela's by Kansas Speedway. I just flip a coin on where I go.

As soon as my pond is finished and things settle down, I'm goint to build some wood duck boxes. If they get plentiful, I may decide to harvest 1 or 2 a year, or maybe not.

I had one show up at my pond this morning its really nice having a full pond hehe. Bobad what kind of boxes are you talking about? Is there anything i can do to keep them around?

do a search on wood duck box desing, lots of info on how to built your own. Just keep in mind baby wood ducks and bass do not mix well.

h2o, never seen another until now......my first shotgun...my grandad's early 1900's crescent fire arms co., norwhich conn, USA, quail hammerless 410, double barrel, 26-inch full choke, almost like a rifle, for upland game....they dont make em like they used to IMO, beautiful old gun there.

I dont have any bass in my pond but thanks for the heads up.

i think i posted this somewheres else, but between my pond (no bass) and the downstream ranch pond (lots of bass) the ducks and geese come up to our place every spring to have their chicks and raise em until big enough to go back down to the bigger water. this is a bone of contention between wifey and i......she wants to keep the ducks, i want bass to keep my sunnys on the run and growing big!

we had a brief visit from mr. wood duck this spring.....i thought i was looking at a brilliantly colored decoy.....they are beautiful.....first and only one i've seen in over 10 years here. my dad tells me to put a box up, but havent researched that yet.

Dave, I can only wish we get ducks like Cal. BUT I guess if we only get one duck consistently in GA glad it is the wood duck, they are absolutely beutiful. THey makeup about 70% of ducks killed in GA with 20% mallards and all else the remainder. Send a few pintails our way and we will send you some woodies how bout it?

Uh oh... I didn't even think about bass. I put up three boxes last year and had three nesting pairs but never saw the younguns. I was blaming the turtles.
