My neighbor, who is from Missouri, and I, I was raised in Ohio, were talking this afternoon and a subject came up that begs me to ask this question on this forum.
How do you pronounce Crappie in your area? In Virginia, where I am now, it is pronounced like crap with a "y" on the end. In Missouri, and Ohio, it is pronounced like crop with a "y" on the end. Just wondering where the line is that changes it.

Where in Ahia did you grow up, Rick? I'm hoping to grow up here myself one of these years.
It's always been CROP-ee to me; I wonder if the Ahia pronunskiation is one of those North vs. South of I-70 things, like "greasy" versus "greazy", "sack" versus "bag", and "Cleveland Browns/Indians" versus "bunch of losers"?

Rick,
It must vary in Michigan. One of my colleagues in fisheries class from the Grand Rapids area pronounced it Crap eeeeeee. Here in Indiana, at least in my area of the state we pronounce it crop eeee.
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Most folks here call them White perch , south and west of here its sac o' lait (sack of milk). The ones here who don't call them WP call them crop - e. You could get some strange angry looks if you said crap-ee near the boat or bucket launch area -- someone might get offended thinking you are talking about their car/pickup or worse their trailer or fish-in gear.

True ewest! If you announce you are going out to the "crappie" pond ... well you might just be going alone. :p But heck we rednecks still do it anyway.

Oh my gosh! I hope this dont bring on another attack of PHS(pointy hat syndrome) for Brettski. - ooohhh boy, my fingers are a-twitchin'! I won't post it, I won't go there. I am on the eleventh step of beating PHS; this must be my test. I even considered admitting to Burger that I googled Uranus....AHHHH, I did it! I'M DOOMED... (hand me the hat, please) - - Everything I remember calls 'em Crah-pee...

It's crappie with an "a" not an "o."
Don't you just feel dumb when you say "croppie?" I know I do (kidding, just kidding!)
This is a great topic & thread is because we are all so used to reading each others' words. Therefore none of the pronounciations or dialect comes through.
Excerpt from Robert Crais' "The Monkey's Raincoat:" "She took another microscopic bite of her sandwich, then pushed it away. Maybe she absorbed nutrients from her surroundings."

We call them sac-a-lait or white perch around here... about 50/50. Like ewest, I wouldn't dare call one a crappie around strangers. I know some guys that call the big ones "slabs", and it sort of stuck. Now they even call the smaller ones "little slabs".
