We have a part of our pond next to the tullies we call "the disposal". Aside from the worms and yellow jackets we dispose of mice , a headless rattle snake and today a huge tranchula . And I dont think any of the LMB are over 16 inches. If you toss it there the water explodes and all is gone. I was working on the dock and a swallows nest fell in .I couldn't grab any in time, they even ate the eggs. On the other end of the topic, being a gluttin, when I was younger I had a LMB in a tank and his mouth would be so full of gold fish it wouldn't close, but he would keep going after them just to kill'em. I was going to insult the intelligents of the LMB but I was acting the same way with a NewYork strip at Ruths' Chris Steak House the other night... Kevin

I have also seen a bass take down a baby duck. I scared one that was by itself into the water, I didnt see it, next thing I know this huge mouth comes up with a big splash and down goes the duck. I felt bad for the duck but was glad I got to see it.

It's easy to see why the LMB is the top dog predator in most ponds. These bad boys will eat almost anything that fits into their mouth. My wife and I were Yak fishing (no were weren't fishing for the big hairy animal, we were fishing from our Kiyak ), anyhoo, while Yak fishing my wife was using a minnow lure that was about 3 inches long. An adolescent LMB hit it. She reeled it in and the bass was only about 7 inches long. I wish I had taking a photo of it, the lure was about half as long as the fish. I don't know how the LMB was planning on swallowing the darn lure. Green Sunnies are highly aggressive also. We have caught them on various lures that I would have never thought they would strike. As an also and besides, fishing from a kiyak is a blast. We have a two person Kiyak and the wife and I fish from it all the time. It quiet, easy to manuevre, takes very little paddling effort, and is not tippy like a canoe. (Had a bad experience with 3 people in a canoe once but that is a story for another day ).

you supposin thats where "Tippecanoe" came from?
in addition to resident ducks and geese, our neighboring ranchpond has lunker LMB in it. however, every spring the ducks and geese have their broods up at our pond cause it has no bass......yet......when they get big enough (those that survive the coyotes, fox, and birds of prey) mommy and daddy take them back down to ranch pond for rest of the summer, fall and winter.
i'm still negotiating with the wife about stocking bass, she'd rather have the baby birds every spring.....i'm trying to explain how we'll manage for small stunted bass and trophy lepomis....its a tough one.
GSF are people too!
