Pond Boss Forums INTRO Questions & Observations Caught wierd fish in my pond saturday

So where minnow fishing on my 2 acre pond saturday night. About 12 beers(a piece) and a pack of cigarretes into the night we catch a fish that is half perch, bluegill or whatever crossed with a crappie. I fished for 20 years and this thing was funny looking, it was tall like a big bluegill but had the exact stripes of a crappie. It weighed about 1/2 pound. It had that black dot behind his gills like the perch do. Ive owned the pond 3 years and this is the first time to see one. Anybody else see one? Oh and we caught a 8 pound bass at 1 in the morning on a minnow. The thing was massive. I have one of those electric scales where the handle pops up that u get at walmart and it said 8 pounds but I could swear its wrong. Its hialrious the damn minnow was as big as the bass's eye ball. Why we he go after such a little fish being as big as he was. I have a picture of the bass on my computer if someone wants to post it ill email it to them. Also have 2 solid white catfish in my pond pink eyes.

Could it be a Redear Sunfish?

Shorty looks exactly like your fish black dot and all, except it had the stripes on the side instead of dots. We took s picture with a camera phone but the damn thing didnt come out, so i guess its a fish story huh.

JHFV, you're probably waiting for this..but, sometimes when I drink a coupla 6 packs, the dots become stripes.

From the 3 studies below it is unlikely that it was a Lepomis X Pomoxis cross, as the rate of fertilization , hatching and survival to 2 inches is very low ( but possible) in ideal conditions. Survival to a larger size is even more remote. These were in controlled conditions not taking into consideration natural crossing barriers like different breeding temps , times and methods of spawning and recognition of like kind. These lower the chances even more. My bet is it was a RES or a RES cross.

Did the Crappie Mutant look like this guys crappie?

I believe it to be a rock bass, maybe your's was a rock bass hybrid of some sort.
