I JUST WATCHED THE BILL DANCE FISHING SHOW ON CRAWDADS. HE CAUGHT ABOUT A DOZEN 3-4 POUNDERS. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE HE WAS FISHING?

Bill always catches 3-5 punders becuase he fishes private lakes during the pre-spawn. I have never seen him catch anything that was less than 2.5 lbs.

I don't where he was fishing Graham but I watched the same episode. I have tried the fake crawdads without any luck what so ever. I have not found any evidence that crawdads occur naturally in my pond (never actually saw one in the pond and have not noticed any crawdad holes). For me it could be that either (1) the bass in my pond have never saw a crawdad either and therefore are not interested or (2) they are waiting for me to dip the little lobster in drawn butter before the dine on it.

Do you guys have luck using the crawdad soft lures?

Yes they are a very good lure for big LMB. Live ones are much better. If I had to catch a large LMB I would use a live craw , water dog (aquatic salamander ) or small BG.

3-4 lbs is a HUGE crawdad!

What was he using for bait? a 2 lb bass!

Seriously, I have several of the various styles of crankbaits I use in a crawfish "pattern" or paintjob as well as several styles of soft plastic crawfish near replicas that look exactly like a crawdad and immitators such as tubes. All have been effective at one time or another. I have also used soft craws (live crawdads in molt where the shells are paper thin) but they are expensive and hard to keep on a hook, even specially designed hooks. In ponds, the Rebel Craw (a realistic looking crankbait)has performed well for me on bass and the Wee-craw deadly on big BG and HBG where no crawfish were present and not so well on large public lakes where crawfish were present...go figure.

My niece and my daughter caught 4 or 5 very large crawdads on minnows in my pond this summer.
They'd pull up the line with the crawdad hanging onto the minnow with his pincher.
They weren't near 3 to 4 lbs though.

That's why Bill Dance has a TV show, our tiny 6"ers are no contest!

I never fished with plastic crawdads much until this guy named Lusk dropped a line into my pond a couple of years ago.

He had what was apparently a "one of a kind" soft plastic crawdad and caught about a 3.5 LMB on the third cast.

Since then I've fished them quite successfully.

(I am pretty sure his was a one of a kind lure because, when he took the lure off of the Shimano Bantum 100 I loaned him, he put it in one of those big cargo pockets he has on his shirts and I never saw it again.)

I still have that crawfish. It's a bit ragged, but it's still in my pocket.

One of my favorite all time bass baits is a Lake Fork brand crawfish rigged Texas style, no weight on a 5 0 hook. Work it slow and hang on! You can find them at Academy.
