Just thought I would add a few views of my pond and wildlife this summer.

Awesome Eric. Does the stream run at this time of year?

Thanks! I ususally have the stream running all months except late July and August. It will run even then as well when we get a big rain. I am glad it does because the pond in general seeps a great deal more than expected due to some issues that I ran into prior to finding pond boss. On average during those two months where it is not running I can go down about 2 - 3 feet in water level.

Wow, Eric. That's nice. Anybody else notice that the forum is starting to be it's own magazine, complete with great photos, how-to, letters to the editor, etc., etc.? It's like getting 32 magazines each month.

You know we as a community should have the Pond Boss start an artisitic book of Pond pics that they can sell for profit to support this great effort here. Many people would love to see or have a book with the images that we have here. And those of us who would contribute would be honored to have people admire our ponds without trespassing!!!

Great pictures, thanks for posting.

Eric (NY), in the photo of the crayfish holes, I first thought muskrats. What is the diameter of the holes? The crayfish I have bore holes about a quarter in diameter.

Eric (MS), In your second series of photos, what's the building/structure in photo 5?

Russ, The holes go anywhere from 1/4 inch up to 6 inches around and up to 2 ft deep into the wall. Some of the holes start in the wall and they dig up through the outside surface and I have mud mounds about 2 ft up and away from the pond. I have dug into them and found the crayfish. I think they get bigger because of the wave action and the frogs who hide in them as well.

In this latest dry spell I added more area to the pond ( shallows 2 - 4 ft deep ) and added tons of rock and rip rap to the shelfs where the shallows are. After that I noticed that there are fewer new crayfish holes. Either the fish have gotten to the crayfish and limited the numbers, or they have gone deeper into the pond, or they are using the rocks instead of hiding in the walls of the pond.

Most of my crayfish came out of a creek and as such were used to rocks not digging into the mud. I think that when I gave them the correct cover they are less likely to dig where they are not supposed to dig. At least that is what I am hoping for.

Thanks J.E. I have tons of them but would not want to flood the board with all of my silly pics.

As I said earlier I think it might be fun to develop the pics from all of us into a pond book ( coffee table style ) that would be called something like "My slice of heaven" or "Ponds I have known" ...etc. The have the profits go to the Pond Bosss site to help maintain it.

Russ I think those were Eric in NY's second set of pics. I was wondering what that structure was myself. Looks kinda like the ultimate kids fort.

Ever since I lined my BG pond with rip rap, it has been a magnet for the crayfish and the number of mud volcanoes have virtually disappeared.

Russ, Great to hear that the mud volcanoes have virtually disappeared. I am hoping that it will be the case with mine as well. There is still hope for my pond then!!!!! I need to stop them. I have more seepage due to them than anything I think.

Structure in Photo 5 is my sons play house. I had built it in the area before I planned the pond there. If it wasnt ther ethe pond would be another 34 ft long (length of the play house). It stands about 12 ft tall with the roof at around 18 ft tall. My oldest doesnt use it much any more but my 2.5 year old I can't keep off from it. It has a great overview of the entire pond!


Ewest, I thought they were cool looking as well. If I were a kid I would be all over them. Since I scuba dive, I sort of thought if I was very very tiny, they would be great caves to explore!!!
