Wondering if anybody ever managed to cross yellow perch with sauger (rattlesnake pike) or walleye since their "kinda" in the same family (although I know the scientific names are different). Perca Canadense would be pretty cool! Larger, meaner, warm water version of the yp. And if any of you bio genius types here on the board try this and make a million off of "rattlesnake perch" at least credit the name to me

Although closely related they have completely different spawning habits. That is one lays eggs in strands while the other does not. I think at least the egg process would have to be the same.
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Also The two species belong to different taxonomic genera which means they are not real closely related similar to GSF, BG, RES, pumpkinseed sunfish, and several of the other sunfishes which all belong to the same genus (Lepomis). Past research has found it real difficult to hybridize fish from different genera. DNA or chromosomal composition is probably enough different between Yperch and walleye to prevent successful union of egg and sperm and allow development of an embryo to full term. FYI: genus of Yperch is Perca and for walleye and sauger it is Zander (old name - Stizostedion)

Walleye and Sauger are now "zander" instead of "stizosteion"? What did they make that change along with the "Pluto's not a planet" thing this week? Are you familiar with the Australian fish "zander"? I've heard the name a couple times, but not really any info.
