My delema. I have a 27yr old, 36 acre, man made lake across the street from my house. Max depth is 8 feet with some areas having 16" of sediment. The lake has virtually no habitate or structure for its bass, crappie, bluegill, catfish, carp etc. No areation and its hot!! in Arizona. It is retention for Salt River Project Utility. AZ GFD has no control. For a scout project my son is building some habitat near the landing where a kids fishing tournament is held.
But my question to you pond pros is this. I see a lot of "early American" all wood kitchen furniture for sale cheap. Do you think that the stains or finishes would harm the lake or fish if I sunk a bunch???? Ric

I doubt that it would do much harm but the Salt River Authority might frown on it. Arizona is pretty narrow minded about water. I expect some Department of Something has control of every drop of water in AZ. I also expect it would hang up a bunch of hooks. You have no shortage of rocks. I would try them. The Scouts would probably feel better about that. Yep, I spent 4 years at Luke AFB and it is hot.

Thanks Dave D, what do you think of PVC vs wooden habitates. We also thought of 4' 1/2" pvc with plastic fence zip tied to them as "leaves" in a plastic bucket of concrete.
By the way the weekend forcast is 110F, almost too hot to fish

Ric, I love PVC and think it would make a great scout project. Quit bellyachin, 110 is a nice balmy day there. When I first settled in with Luke as my full time home, we had no AC in the barracks. That was a character builder, especially for guys who were from cool climes.

ric, i like pvc also. i made some pvc structure from left over fencing material. also, had some broken pvc furniture, threw it in the pond also. those cheap chairs and lounges that last about a year, then break, those are pretty good, and you see them in trash pic up piles a lot. mark

Another option is PVC pipe "trees", anchored with a concrete block. You can take 1" PVC, cut into six foot lengths. Then, six inches from one end, drill a half inch hole. Spin the pipe 1/4 turn, drill another half inch hole six inches down....do this to the bottom. Then, take six foot lengths of half inch PVC and push them through the holes. That makes one "tree". Then, couple several together and position them to sink into 6-8 foot waters.
Personally, I like hardwood tree limbs, too. Keep this in mind...you are trying to attract fish, both baitfish and game fish. So, you need some cover to be dense, some to be "fluffy". And, for a 3/4 pond, three to five "piles" of cover are enough. Your goal? No more than fifteen percent of the pond should have cover. And, stay away from the deepest areas.
