When I was a kid and we built our Summer place in Eagle River WI, we drove a sand point for our own drinking water well. In our case, the property was populated with mature pines. We selected an area where 2 stout trees flanked both sides, ran a 2 x 10 between the trees about 15' up, and hung a pulley directly over the drill zone. The driving unit was a solid 1" round bar, about 5 feet long, with a 10# or 12# weight welded to the top (some compact metal mass) and the this mass had a metal loop or eye welded to the top of it. A rope was attached to this loop/eye, up thru the pulley, and down to manual pull/drop cycles. We used the same sacrificial drive coupler and technique as Waterloo has described.
