If you have already ordered the clay and are comfortable applying it, I would go with that route.
Most firt timers are not clear on how it works or how to apply it. Be sure to add your littorial shelfs and plant them with aquatics that are native in your area. Again, at least 40% coverage is desired. Most of them can be maintained with a simple Rodeo mix with an aquatic surfactant and keep the plants in check by treating the outer edges of each mono-culture.
I would look into a small aeration system just to keep the water circulating so you do not have the chance to even start to build up muck and noxious gases on the bottom.
On another note, just from experience and speaking with the City of Orlando and the City of Winter Park, they have been irradicating Pickerlweed from their lakes. It seems that this aquatic defoliated so much that in the areas where this plant was found, large amounts of muck could be found.
