I'm very new to micro-ponds so can't help you much...but would think, if you have fish and you feed them, you will need a filtration system. Our micro-pond, which is around 1600 gallons plus or minus with a waterfall, will loose water clarity very quickly without the filtration.
Regarding fish, it is kind of nice to be able to see them in this sort of setting. I put in a small LMB and can never see it, but do observe it attacking minnows on occasion. BG are pretty much the same way, out of sight pretty much. We also have Tilapia and Pacu and some gold fish and Koi, which are much more visible.
I really enjoy just sitting by the micro-pond, drinking an adult beverage, and contemplating.
