I hate to see a big turtle destroyed and if it were in my pond, I would welcome or at least tolerate it.

However, your pond is different. I wouldn't use an untended bank line for fear that I would catch a marketable fish and not be there to release it unharmed. I recall that you can't shoot in your neighborhood so I would fish for it.
