Just finished major rehab job on a 18 acre lake. Time to add water. There are some canals that still hold water and are full of small fish mostly trash fish. The local ag co-op acts like it will take an act of congress to get Rotenone. What is the proper way of obtaining this stuff? Thanks Dr. Bob Guillory

The stuff is restricted in Texas. It has to be obtained and applied by a licensed Pesticide Applicator.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Have your Texas Parks and Recreation department provide you with a list of licensed applicators.

Texas is not alone. I don't know of any state where it is not restricted.

I would hire someone to apply it as you will regret it if you don't. (leaving trash fish in the pond)

In most states you can apply it yourself, and purchase it yourself if you take a short course and pass a test. However it's typically only offered once a year and in my case for just one application it would be cheaper just to hire someone. I checked it out.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Cecil is correct. Rotenone is USEPA restricted use to licensed applicators in all of US. To purchase it the seller needs to have the license number of the applicator.

Thanks for the response. I will hire someone to apply it. I will check with my wildlife biologist for applicators. Thanks again

Check with your parish coop. ext. agent they can usually help . You can also use hydrated lime or potassium permanganate to sterlize small water pockets. The later link (KMnO4 ) I would leave to the pros. See links below.
