Pond Boss Forums INTRO Questions & Observations fish identification

Saturday we were at a family gathering at my Uncle's farm in Kentucky, and I took my 9 & 3 y/o's fishing in one of the ponds. We caught several nice bass & crappie, and one strange looking fish I couldn't id. (No pic, didn't have camera handy)

The fish had a head like a green sunfish, body like a crappie, and the belly and bottom fins were bright yellow, practically neon yellow. It had a dark spot on the side like a bluegill. It weighed about a pound, and while crappie shaped it was fatter than crappie usually are. I thought it might be a goggle eye, but I've caught them before and don't remember them looking like that. Any idea what this fish is?

That neon yellow edge on the fins screams "HBG" to me...

p.s. Where would this site be without Conspello Checking?

I checked several sites before posting and couldn't find it, thinking it may be some sort of natural hybrid. It looks somewhat like the HBG in Matt's pic but with a larger mouth, longer body, and bright yellow on the fins instead of orange.

The particular pond we were fishing in is one of the oldest on the farm, and there is no telling what has made it's way in there over time :p

LOOKS like a Georgia Giant to me. Or maybe just a standard bluegill/green sunfish. Definately green sunfish as parent...I'd put money on it anyway. Just because the fish has a red ear, doesn't mean redear parent. I've seen thousands of standard hybrid bluegill that look like the above fish as well as ML's Giants.

Anyone else seen lots of standard hybrid bluegill? Something they can add? I've seen some interesting hybrids and we try to speculate the recipes. I'll try to get pics from those that we find. Hopefully there will be very few.

By standard, I mean fish that were hatched in Arkansas.
