Pond Boss Forums INTRO Questions & Observations Pond Update!

I have not had as much time for Pond Boss now that my pond is full. I spend a lot of my spare time down at the pond. I have my catfish feeding twice a day and really enjoy watching them eat. Here they are feeding at dawn:





I have also been trying to identify and photograph some beautiful birds I have living at my pond. They turned out to be Green Herons. I am sure they are eating some of my fathead minnows. They are not that large a bird, somewhere between a pigeon and a chicken. They are very wary and hard to get a good look at and a good photo. Anyone ever have any problems with them?

Great indigo blue color effect on the pond pics. We have a couple green herons and they have not caused any effect that I can id. I keep a healthy RES population to offset any parasites that may come via the wading birds.

I bet a few months ago you may have been thinking about fish balance in the pond but not about balancing time between ponding and posting. Welcome to the club!

We have had one or two Green Herons off and on for at least 3 years, as opposed to Great Blues which seem to be here all the time. I like the Greens as there is no way they can eat as much as a Blue, plus they really cuss you out when you're at the pond with them. Our generic name for Green Herons is "Garp" from the call they make when taking off.

V nice, PFF! Sure is a far cry from about 2 months ago when you were worried that you wouldn't get enuff water to fill a thimble. As Scarface would say, "lookatchoonow"! I'm real happy for ya, pondmeister.
Luv the morning pics...it is, no doubt, the very best time of the day. Keep us up to speed on the bird stuff, too.

You must have gotten that frog strangler? Nice pictures, nice pond.

We also have a couple of green herons that come by in summer. A few fatheads are a small price to pay to view them.

Yep, it wasn't enough just to show a full pond, you had to go with the azure visuals. Congrats, and now let's see some productivity. We will forgive you for the sparse postings. Enjoy!

Thank you ewest- you know nature paints a trillion masterpieces every day. My goal is to enjoy at least one per day.

Theo- As beautiful as these birds are I will buy them some fatheads for lunch from time to time.

Brettski- I can't wait until you have your pond completed. There is nothing like it in the world. You feel like you have built something great and it makes you wax poetic for a while.

Yep, PFF missed that post. I don't do much on the net on weekends...like you, I prefer to be outdoors. You did indeed get a frog strangler!

Today, several communities south of us got 13 inch rains...we only got 1/2 inch but thankful for that. Enjoy the journey.

PFF did the contractor correct his mistakes? I don't recall a report on what the final outcome was, it looks like your island is above water in these pic's. Did you cut down the spillway and resove the issue of water flowing out in the wrong place on your neighbors property? Just curious.

rocky- I talked to my neighbor who did not seem concerned. Some of the creek water ran in his stock tank. The spillway is the same but the water has dropped 18" in 4 weeks. Not too bad for a new pond and the level has stabilized. I am going to wait until August and see how low the pond gets. Then I can decide what to do.
