Has anyone seen a LMB with red eyes? A friend of mine was fishing this weekend in a lake North of me and caught over 20 bass about 12" off a large brushpile that had red eyes. We have caught many LMB from this lake but never saw one with red eyes before. Does anyone know what causes this?

I had asked my friend if it might be a spotted bass and he said it did not have teeth on the tongue so it leads me to believe it probably isn't a Coosa by the description in the link, but according to the distribution description it may be possible to have them in central Ohio. I am planning to go to the lake and catch one if the weather holds out today, maybe I can get some pics.

How big were the bass? Could it be possible that you caught rock bass?

The bass were all around 12". I went to the lake last night, caught 4 largemouth around that size but none with red eyes. I never found the brush pile my friend was talking about so I probably wasn't in the right spot. Probably not rock bass, he is a tournament bass angler would know the difference.

This it?  If so, it's a Micropterus coosae, aka Coosa bass, aka Red Eye Bass.

Red eye bass are not in Ohio although they could have been privately stocked

I'd really like to see one these fish for myself. With an adult size of 14" to 17" a coosa probably wouldn't be desirable for ponds outside of a novelty fish. Maybe I'll try to catch one again tonight.
