I wouldn't bet the farm just yet on that being a black crappie. White crappie have 5 or 6 dorsal spines, blacks have 7 or 8. The pictured fish appears to have 6. White crappie have vertical banding present typically, which I see on several of the stringered fish. Breeding male whites are just as dark as blacks. I believe you will sometimes see mixing of the two species as well. I'd seriously consider the possibility of this being a breeding male white crappie.
