I am planning on building soon here in Mount Pleasant, MI. I was wonderering about a good grass to plant along the banks once the project is done. I see alot of you guys are in warmer states, so I don't know what a good low maintance option would be here in the colder climate. Thanks for the help!

Several Michigan pond owners frequent this site. Numerous other northern pond owners from Canada, PA, OH, NY, IN, IL, WI, MN, SD, ND and maybe a few others also visit and contribute. The "grass along the banks" is it land based lawn type grass, emergent vegetation in shallow water and along the shoreline or vegatation to stabilize the soil at the high water line? Numerous grass types can ocur along the banks.

I was looking to see what would be good to plant along the edge once the pond is completed to keep down erosion etc. Thanks.

when the pond filled and i knew the perimeter was level around the pond ( laser transit helps lol ) i spread about 3 " or so of top soil and planted buffalo grass and put softball size rocks on the east side . i can cut right up to the water. buffalo grass only grows 6 - 8 " and lays over , very low maintance. it's not cheap so i planted it out about 5' from the pond and the rest of the area i planted pasture mix , which was cheap. i cut around the pond when i do the yard, ( i like neat pond ) \:\)

i only wanted to have some fun
