On my property there is a wellhouse with pressure tank and a well pump. There is a power pole nearby and it wouldn't be hard to hook up the pump. We live 7 miles from the property, but I was thinking of running power to the wellhouse. It would be nice to have an outdoor electric plug and water spigot, and light inside the wellhouse.

The main pond is about 100 yards away from the wellhouse and could be reached from the wellhouse by connecting a couple garden hoses together. The pond was dug just over a month ago and isn't filling up as fast as I would like.

If I were to hook up the pump and put a spigot outside the wellhouse, would it really put a lot of water into the pond fast? It's a 3/10 acre 8' deep pond. I'm also wondering how much hard minerals would end up in the water and if oxygen would eventually permeate the pumped up well water again. There is only a couple feet of rainwater in the pond now and no fish.

I have a friend that dug a well for his half acre pond, but he only uses it to top off the pond during low water levels.

Thanks,
Eric

Eric it would depend on how many gallons per minute your well and pump produced.Also does your well need to recover after extended pumping time? I top off my pond with well water.It is 200 x 80 feet .pumping @ 18 galloms per minute(which in Livermore Ca. is a large well)I have to run my generator for 20 hours strait to get about 4 inches of water in the pond.Hope this helps a bit... Good luck,Kevin

Hi Kevin,
Thanks for the info, it helps a lot. I'm not sure how many gpm the well & pump will do. Power has been disconnected to it since we bought the property. There is no house on the property so we haven't bothered with utilities yet. I've considered using a generator to power the well. The previous owner said the well is 125' deep, and that it never ran dry when he used it for extended periods. My pond is right at 3/10 acre so it's a little smaller than yours.

Thanks,
Eric

Kevin;
I had problems with my pond(160x100)droping in water level about 2 to 3 feet late every summer.The well I put in was suppose to get 20gpm it only got 15gpm,but that well is the best thing I did for that pond. It is amazing how 15gpm can raise the level in the pond just over night. I cascade the water down some rocks never had an o2 problem in ten years....jimmy

Eric,

You will need to pump 8,148 gallons in your pond to raise it ONE inch. Make sure that you have a gate valve on your line to adjust the flow of water from causing the pump to cycle off and on continuously..... it will shorten the life of your pump. Good luck.

20 acres of trees & 3/4 acre pond.
