Wasp nests the size of dinner plates!
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

The Lake Fork memories are neat guys. What year did Fork open...'81? Dave I do remember the bee nests and snakes in the trees as you'd troll thru the dense flooded woods. Saw several football size bee nests that looked like this: Also the gators. I was with a guide once and he spotted a gator at least six foot long and pointed it out to us. George do you remember an early day Lake Fork guide named Bob Uhler? I think Bob Uhler was on Tawakoni for years then moved to Fork when it opened.

Yes Mark, I remember Bob Uhler by reputation at Tawoakoni, and his later days guiding at Fork - he was one of the best! Did you fish with him? G/

The real question we should be asking from a management perspective is why are the sizes and numbers going down at Lake Fork. Anyone want to tackle that one ?

Here is a picture of the day we bought our dock on Lake Fork...notice all the trees in the water? And here is a pic of our dock the day we sold it last year...trees mostly gone. It was a bittersweet goodbye, but we're happy to now be on private water.

Mark, I was there opening day. I know George caught hundreds of LMB back then, but I never did that good.
Al, the reason I caught more fish than you did on Fork in the early 80's was becase you were a green kid just out of college and I was EXACTLY your present age - gotcha...

George, I liked girls then, so fishing was down my list a smidge. Now I have one too many.
I agree about CaR. I can pull 40 a day out of my puddle, and it's management. You take one LMB out of a reservoir, and you're publicly chastised. All BOW need predator control, but public opinion has sadly changed all that.

Also, a lot of the TX lakes that are producing SAL's are lake's that have had the great water fluctuations. Falcon, O.H. Ivie, etc.

Good answer George. I will try to find some info to post on lake aging. Once the wood and grass etc go missing there is a large drop off in production unless it is replaced with something.

I do fine but the amount and size of the bass I take in has declined in the last 20 years.
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Most people I know who fish, do it for the dinner table, and some sport, but usually to bring home keepers. I have said this before, and I know it is not popular, but I have never known of anyone to purposely rig up for LMB. No need to take this wrong, just the way it is. George would probably enjoy hooking into a 10+ lb Steelhead, with his fly rig in one of our rivers. No need for thermal underwear if it is cold out

Cecil, everybody down here is doing replicas. I understand why, but it's just not the same. You might as well get a gallery wrap of the picture.
My guys got me an Alaskan fishing trip for my retirement gift. Hopefully I'll have a real fish or two to send your way.

I can't think of anything more boring than only having one game fish. The YP pictures on the fishing 2013 thread are beautiful, and I have no idea even how to catch them. Salmon in Alaska, trout in Montana, Yellow Perch in Indiana, it's all good.

Looks mighty cold George! I was just reading an article from a couple years ago that stated SMB and LMB are the most underutilized sport fish in MI. Main reason stated is we are "consumptive minded" up here. The article referenced a number of LMB hot spots. It also stated that many of the LMB are skinny, but there are big ones too. SMB are pretty much everywhere. In my top 10 of favorite fish! I've caught my fair share of King's during my stint as a charter boat pilot. It was a volunteer position, but hey, charters are pretty darn expensive, so I looked at it as free fishing and incredible fun!!! One thing that has been buzzing thru my head, is taking a stab at raising LMB. Grow some in a controlled environment. That would be way down the road tho. I think we need you guy's to come up here and show us how to do this LMB thing! You'll have to come up here tho. If it gets too warm, I'll melt

Cecil, everybody down here is doing replicas. With 3D printing hitting the scenes, you'll soon be able to do your own replicas of actual fish you caught. Autodesk Labs had a technology software preview of one of their products. I forget the name of it, but how this worked is, you need to take at least 3 pictures of an object, more is better. Thru cloud computing, this software would compile the pictures into a 3D image. Once you have a 3D image, you could send it to your 3D printer, and soon after you would have an actual, physical 3 dimensional model of the image that was generated on your screen. The printer resolutions are getting better, and the prices are coming down. This is not super new technology, it's been around in various industries/labs for a few years now.

I've seen shows on that technology, and it is interesting. When they figure out how I can print a stainless steel bolt at midnight, I'll be the first in line for a 3D printer. Nothing worse than spending $20 in gas to find a 89 cent bolt.

A guy at work sent me a link to a story where they were making functioning guns. Political in nature, so I wont post it. It also stated that they were working on 3D printers that make metal parts. Should be at your local Home Depot in about 10 years. NASA has 3D metal printers for making quite intricate rocket parts. So do many other manufacturers. A company in Germany builds the equipment. Kinda on the pricy side tho
