That's a big no no. Have all the overflows in place before you pack the basin. Do some research on it and you'll be fine. Even if there is no watershed feeding the pond if you make the basin almost impermeable you will gain water just thru precipitation and the pond will eventually fill just through precip. If your pond fills up and then you get two inches of rain on 10 acres of pond, that's 72,600 ft^3 of water, or 543,000 gallons. That water has to have some place to go. It's not complicated but you have to do your homework or hire a professional. If you pack the basin without an overflow you'll have a dangerous situation on your hands.

Thanks for the compliment! I've learned a lot myself, such as the physical limits of a siphon! Where I'm greenest is in management of the pond once built. That's where I'm learning a lot on the board.
