I have been running traps in my forage pond all winter to trap out ther crappie that were thrown in. To my suprise this morning, one of my traps was full of creek chubs. I have them in an aquarium and as soon as I can find which box I packed my camera in, I will get you the pic's. I thought the bass and crappie that were introduced had wiped them all out, but I guess I was wrong.

h20 I look forward to seeing the photo. Photo Hint. If you take pictures of the fish in the aquarium cut a piece of cardboard the size of the side of the aquarium. Use it to slowly crowd the fish close to the front glass, then photograph them. Post photo here or email them to me. Don't crowd too many chubs into the aquarium especially in warm conditions of the house. You can easily kill them in an aquarium with too many fish. Pictures of dead ones will not be as good as photos of live fish.

Fowlkiller, how is the duck hunting in Mizzou? We didn't make out annual trip to AR this year and I'm starting to panic. Have a friend going to western KY this weekend. Might jump in the car next week and drive until we start seeing birds.

Steve-Duck hunting was horrible this year. I only shot 4 ducks this year off my pond. Killed 47 off it last year. I don't think the birds have really pushed thru yet.

Bill- I'll try it again.

H2O - Still no evidence of receiving an email from you. First try to just send me a word email. Maybe my server is blocking or filtering out your message because of the attachment.

Waterfowl/Bill -- you guys can include me in the "loop" for the email as well, if you want. Maybe if waterfowl can get it to me, I can try several ways of getting it to you, Bill. Just an offer, if problems persist! [email protected]

H2O I just checked my server for incoming emails. I got several emails from Dr. Willis'. I never received any emails from H2O. VERY alarming!

I will chose the best photo, forward it to Bruce and he will post it for all to see. TOUCHDOWN! It sounds like a football play.

I promise to learn this photo posting technique, hopefully in 2006.

ewest,

No, but Bill and Dave both have it. I'll get my brother to pull that bogus email address off of the website.

If you weren't so hopped up on DMD, you would have removed that bogus email yourself.

H2O - How long is this fish? It looks to be about 3"-4" long. It resembles a creek chub and a couple of the other similar looking species of chubs. Are you sure these are reproducing in your pond?. Do you have smaller young of the year fish from these? Is it your pond that has underground springs feeding it? This might help explain reproduction.

To verify the species I would like to have one of these fish pickled. Put a live one into some straight vodka, gin or wiskey. The higher the proof the better. Let it soak in booze for a couple days, remove the fish wrap in a damp booze soaked towel, put it in a small box and send it to me. Bill Cody, PO Box 64, Malinta OH 43535-0064. I'm sure you will get plenty of suggestions of what to do with the booze that the fish soaked in for a couple days. Maybe the South Central meeting of PB members would sample it and guess the vintage. There is an algae professor near me that to belong to his pond club you have to drink some of his lily pond water. I am not a member, I know what is in pond water and so does he. Most members are drunk when they join his club. ;\) No dead students yet at his place!. When they throw up around the pond,I don't know if it is from the booze or the pond water.

PS Way to go Bruce you are my hero. I don't listen to what everyone else says about your bad habits.

The only habits of Condello's that I consider bad are his DMD exploits and his tendencies to jump rope.

Bruce -- bad habits--- what --- he has none and is a great guy as well. \:\) Now Black Jack Kidd and Dr. Frankenbruce are a different story . ;\) :p

Bill I have my Peterson Field Guide in hand and am looking at chubs. If the proof on that enbalming fluid is strong enough then it will not matter what fish was in it -- it will be just like some of that Ga. shine.

Bill ;

I thought I would add this to help the process:

Creek Chub, Semotilus atromaculatus

Dorsal fin origin usually behind pelvic fin base
 Medium-sized eye
 Rounded snout; large, terminal mouth
 Pale olive and silver sides
Dark spot at the anterior base of the dorsal fin
Dark stripe on side of body
 Pale-colored fins

Similar species:
 Fallfish (Semotilus corporalis)

Mean body size:
Adults are 80-200 mm total length

Habitat:
Creeks and streams of moderate and low gradient

Distribution in VA:
All of Virginia's drainages except the Chowan

Food Habits:
 Omnivore

Reproductive Habits:
Mature at age 1 or 2
Spawning occurs March to May at water temperatures of 12.5-19.5C
Males dig a pit, then build a mound just upstream from the pit
Eggs are deposited in the pit, then covered with stones after each spawning period
Fecundity is about 1,115-7,539 eggs per female

Population Status, Economic, or Ecological Importance:
 Excellent baitfish

Fallfish, Semotilus corporalis

Physical Description:
Slightly compressed body, moderate body form
Dorsal fin origin usually above anterior half of pelvic fin base
 Medium-sized eye
Moderately rounded snout; slightly large mouth, almost inferior
Fully scaled or nearly fully scaled breast
Males get tubercles on front and side of snout over eye, lower cheek, and most fins
 Silver-sided
Smudge at the anterior base of the dorsal fin
Dusky dorsal and tail fin edges

Similar species:
 Creek chub (Semotilus atromaculatus)

Mean body size:
Adults are 150-300 mm standard length

Habitat:
Clear creeks and rivers of moderate and low gradient

Distribution in VA:
James, York, Rappahannock, and Potomac drainages
 Introduced into the Roanoke drainage

Food Habits:
Young feed on phytoplankton, zooplankton, and insects
Juveniles and adults eat insects, crayfish, fish, algae, and detritus

Reproductive Habits:
Mature at age 2 or 3
Spawning occurs late April to June at water temperatures of 14.4-19C
Nests are dome-like mounds with a pit in the downstream part, built with gravel-sized stones, topped with small rubble
Fecundity is about 2,000-12,000 eggs per female
Can naturally hybridize with Clinostomus funduloides and Luxilus cornutus

Population Status, Economic, or Ecological Importance:
Largest minnow east of the Rockies
Constructs the largest stone mound nests known
 Popular gamefish with some anglers
Varied opinions on the taste of the meat

Ewest - The creek chub in the above photo is an adult and probably male around 6"-9". The fish from H2O's pond are old juveniles or real young adults. I am guessing 3"-4". Each summer I sort through hundreds of creek chubs and I am very familiar with them. The close similarity of some of these fish is why I need one pickled to closely examine some body features.

Bill- This pond doesn't have any springs feeding it. It is very shallow...average depth of 2.5 feet. It has a deep hole of 14 feet that we got clay from to make the dam. It is very similar to my creek. Shallow with a mud bottom and very warm in the summer. The fish I took pictures of is approx. 4.5". I am sure it is from last years spawn. I have trapped them from 2"-8.25" in length so far. My pic's I took didn't show the coloration of the fins nor the dark "lateral line". From the research I've done they are indeed creek chubs. Ewest's post describes them perfectly.

Bill :

I knew you were well aware of the ins and outs of chubs. The process I was talking about was not to help you ID the fish. I posted the pics and info for all of us that don't know much about them so we could read a description and look at a pic at the same time. It took a while to use Peterson's and Efish to find a match for the two. When you get the sample I will be interested to see what you think and what the pic did not reveal.
