Doc Dave, down south, perch is actually a colloquialism given to all sunfish other than bass. I don't think that the average person either knows or cares about the difference.
Of course, once we get our own ponds and start sweating bullets about forage/prey balance it becomes important. That's when the PB addiction sets in.
