What benefit is there to adding sheet rock to a pond. I am adding a new arm to an old pond and I have the water pulled down at this time. 2 acre pond in Oklahoma area.

Bassman - I just finished a experiment on water clarity. Using two jars and a silver dollar size piece of half inch drywall. I filled both jars with pond water, floated the dry wall on top of one of the jars, left the second jar with just the pond water. The drywall sunk to the bottom after about 45min. I then left it in the jar for about four weeks, shaking both jars once a day to represent any movement that may occur in the pond. After four weeks there was no visible difference in the water clarity that I could see between the two jars. The drywall was still intact, but only the size of a half dollar.I can't tell you when the drywall finally dissolved, because my wife got tired of looking at the jars on HER deck and dumped them out.

Bassman,

I think you'll get a mixed jury on this topic. View the topics Muddy Water and Water Chemistry to find more information on this subject. Here is one link that provides some input. Sheetrock

After my last big construction project, I (hate to admit this) disposed of all the sheetrock scraps in my pond. So far, nothing's gone "tits up" as my old pal puts it.

Half inch, standard DW, only bad thing was it took about a day for the stuff to sink, and I had to keep the wife away for that long, so's she wouldn't notice and beat me with my fish pole. It's a real nice "Ugly Stik", and she always said "next time, you get beat with an ugly stick...like that would hurt you." \:D

bassman,

My neighbor had a chronic turbidity problem and got desperate. He found some sheetrock, pounded it to a powder with hammers, removed the paper, and spread it in his pond. It cleared up in less than a week. And I do mean clear!

That said, it's easier just to find some powdered gypsum. All that pounding is a pain, or so I've heard. \:\)
