Predatory behavior of fish is complex and has been commonly studied. I think when bass are actively feeding they learned from many attempts to look for the unusual or easiest prey items. Bass look for the easiest to catch food or any unsuspecting food. For any forage fish item that swims normally bass have learned after many attempts that normal swimming food is often difficult to catch or else it would have already have been eaten. Forage fish size categories learn avoidance techniques and when bass are "on the Hunt". IMO bass have attempted to catch normal swimming foods many times and the bass learns who is most vulnerable and often they wait or lurk for easier to catch items. Unusual behavior triggers bass's vulnerability instinct. Degree of hunger and food availability then influences the bass to change the current attack behavior frequency.
I also currently think that not all bass have the same predatory ability. This is often displayed or depicted as aggressiveness.
