Dissolved iron really wants to drop out of the water if you can get the water well oxygenated. Just a cascade through gravel-filled buckets would capture a lot of iron. Do a search for Cecil Baird's posts on how he oxygenated his well water. Cecil ran trout year round in Indiana using a 200 gpm (IIRC) well.
