My Fish have done great , 2021 - July 2023 , the rains came , Filled my upper Canyon Pond after expansion from 1/4 Acre to 1.8 +/- Acre Pond with Average depth of 12FT , lots of Holes through out the Pond exceeding 16FT , Western Oklahoma is drought country , so depth was critical. Only 2 run off rains in May of 2025 , neither was really big , but brought water up to normal pool after reaching Spillway pool July of 2023. Today , the water is 6' down from Just normal pool and 10 - 11FT down from spillway pool , watershed is 38 - 42 Acres of good tight mowed native grasses that with mowing have grown tighter and entire pond is ringed with mown bermuda grass that is incredibly tight , the runoff is clear , nearly zero trees . Fortunately , even without runoff , we've gotten 1/4" - 1/2" showers every 2 weeks or so that have maintained the grasses . This upper Pond is now in danger , Secchi shows 16" - 18" visibility for 2 weeks solid now , in 24 hours it went from 32+" visibility , a beautiful gem stone tsavorite green , to a dull , thick looking , green . I've been saving pennies for 4 years to purchase a Bottom Diffused Aeration system and am approaching the cash to do it , but with this toilet bowl , under todays conditions , is the typical Bottom Diffused what I need ? OR , Today is a Trash Pump or two what I need ? Pull water from 3ft down from one of my fishing piers and run 100' - 200' of discharge line to another Fishing pier and let water fall 7 - 9FT into the pond and start a loop of circulating water . I have 4 Fishing Piers , 2 on south bank ( 1 with 120/240VAC ) and 2 on North Bank , same power available . TYIA , for your Thoughts. Fortunately , the Lower Canyon Pond is hanging on , with fairly clear green water , guessing 28" - 34" visibility . It doesn't have the fishing piers for access . Further , relevant info, I believe . Zero fertilizer, except Endurance 3mm and 5mm averaging 40 lbs per month until this winter , since 01/01/26 , it's slowed because of my health issues , now on average 25 lbs a month and last two weeks , it's been to see if my fish are alive , growing, active , variety of species coming to feed , and it's a yes to all of the above . All info on future rains , forecast , the El Nino is coming on strong right now and Western Oklahoma is in the bullseye , AI calculates , at Full pool between Thanksgiving and New Years . Then by Late March or mid May the Spillways will be running , Sure Praying So . Be nice if we came up even 3Ft by Labor day , half the way to Full normal pool .Oh , NO Domestic Pooing animals in the Watershed , or drinking from the ponds , only Fish and Amphibians using the ponds for a big toilet , even the couple of geese lost all offspring early this year and left a month early .

Wanted to ask if the upper pond flooded grassland or if you graded to clay and created a clay basin. If grassland was flooded and if the organic fraction was very good (as prairie soils often are), this may be the source of nutrients causing your bloom. I mention this because you are not feeding alot and not fertilizing. I'll defer on the aeration question and look forward to those replies.

This pond was scraped down to hard red mud / sand stone , using excavator's , no dozers , way to wet , the excavator buckets were smooth edge , no teeth or thumbs . Just dug out most of clay , would get down to hard pack and you could feel the scraping through your feet . The hard red beds were at all angles and depths and water levels would rise into new digs over night , beautiful clear water. losing this volume and temps from 98 - 107 with no clouds and light winds , the algae has bloomed like never before .

Bottom diffused aerations are the best. Allows to proper addition of oxygen throughout the entire water column.

I am NOT an aeration expert, but have read lots of posts by our experts, so I will give it a stab.

To noobie me, it seemed that an efficient centrifugal pump would move a LOT more water than the air pump flow through a bottom diffusion aerator, and therefore be more efficient for oxygenating the pond.

However, there is one step in the process that is not immediately intuitive. That is the buoyancy effect of that rising column of air bubbles! If the water pump had to LIFT water up by 16 feet, then the electrical costs would go up dramatically. Instead, the air column lifts massive amounts of water from the depths of the pond and delivers it to the surface - without any "mechanical" inputs by the system components.

Part of the subsequent oxygenation comes from pond water in contact with the tiny bubbles, but I believe most of the oxygenation comes from the water being delivered to the air/water interface at the surface of the pond where it can be directly oxygenated, or mixed with other well-oxygenated water.

Literally every commercial operation I have seen uses air diffusers for oxygenation, so I expect they are all getting the most oxygen in the water per dollar spent.

If you need immediate relief, you are going to have to get the water moving somehow. Would have to use a pump and push water over the ground at the inlet of your pond. Not sure how effective this would truly be.

Currently we have enough wind in Oklahoma that is probably saving you but I would be worried about the winds next Tuesday, June 28th.

If you do have to arrange some emergency aeration, maybe search "cascade aeration".

That is one of the more efficient methods to oxygenate moving water. You can do some "poor boy" versions of the industrial methods.
