I have half a dozen seed pods from a wild Fl strain light blue iris. They are spreading slowly rhizome wise. I would like a long portion of the bank at the water's edge to be covered with iris. How do I propagate plants from these pods? The pods seem mature 3-4 months old. Stems now have tipped towards the water. Some of the pods were in the water. One pod was laying in the water & it seemed as if the seeds were developing into tiny bulb iris roots, rhizome like. Two of the pods had separated from the stem.
Let the pods dry & plant the seeds?
How deep to plant?
Put pods back in the water. Allow them to develop there. When the pods are soft & mushy, remove the seeds & plant?

I certainly don't know the answer. However, since every pond is different, perhaps try some experimentation?
Maybe take some cheap plastic pots and drill some holes near the top, throw some gravel in the bottom, throw some of your pond edge material on top of that, and then try some of your ideas. See what is effective, and then do more of that directly in the pond next year.
Good luck! We do have some members with some nice iris edges. I think they suppress erosion, don't grow tall enough to stop anglers from fishing over them, and do inhibit the colonization of some invasive plants. All of which would be good in your pond.

I like your idea about the pots. I have plenty of those to experiment with. I google searched, but the answers did not seem to match what I was seeing with my iris. When in bloom they look nice at the edge of the pond plus all your other comments.
